Abstract

Introduction. Contemporary demographic, social, economic, and security challenges have intensified the need to reconsider traditional approaches to the analysis of population development and human potential. These issues have become particularly relevant in the context of the full-scale war in Ukraine, which has resulted in significant demographic losses, forced migration, deterioration of population health, and transformation of social institutions. Under such conditions, there is a growing need for a comprehensive theoretical and methodological framework for studying socio-demographic resilience as the ability of society to preserve and restore its human potential under crisis conditions.

Purpose of the study. The purpose of the article is to generalize the main scientific approaches to the interpretation of resilience and to substantiate the conceptual foundations of socio-demographic resilience as an independent scientific category.

Research methods. The study is based on systemic, interdisciplinary, and comparative approaches. Methods of scientific generalization, analysis and synthesis, as well as conceptual modeling, were applied. The theoretical basis of the research consists of the works of Ukrainian and foreign scholars devoted to psychological, social, socio-economic, and demographic resilience.

Results. The evolution of scientific approaches to the interpretation of resilience is examined, and the specific features of its application across different fields of scientific knowledge are identified. The key provisions of psychological, social, socio-economic, and demographic approaches to resilience are generalized. The expediency of integrating social and demographic approaches within the framework of socio-demographic resilience is substantiated. An author's definition of socio-demographic resilience is proposed as an integral characteristic of the ability of population and socio-demographic systems to maintain viability, adapt to crisis impacts, restore human potential, and ensure further societal development.

Prospects. Further research should focus on the development of methodological approaches to the assessment of socio-demographic resilience, substantiation of its structural components, and formation of a system of indicators for analyzing socio-demographic processes under conditions of crises and post-war recovery.

Keywords: resilience; social resilience; demographic resilience; socio-demographic resilience; human potential; demographic development; war.
