Abstract

Introduction. Internal displacement has become one of the most significant socio-demographic consequences of the full-scale war in Ukraine. The emergence of a large population of internally displaced persons (IDPs) with distinct demographic, social, and economic characteristics highlights the need for a comprehensive analysis of their socio-demographic profile as a basis for developing effective public policies in the areas of social protection, integration, and demographic recovery.

Purpose. The purpose of the article is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the socio-demographic profile of internally displaced persons in Ukraine and to identify its key characteristics.

Methods. The study is based on a combination of systemic, structural-functional, comparative, and statistical methods of analysis, as well as methods of generalization and grouping. The empirical basis includes official statistical data, state register information, and findings from national surveys and sociological studies conducted by international organizations.

Results. The study demonstrates that the socio-demographic profile of internally displaced persons differs substantially from that of the general population of Ukraine. The analysis identifies specific features of the gender and age structure, household composition, educational attainment, employment, material well-being, and other socio-demographic characteristics of IDPs. It is substantiated that internally displaced persons include a disproportionately high share of socially vulnerable groups, particularly children, older persons, persons with disabilities, and households with increased social support needs. The study also reveals major challenges related to housing, employment, access to healthcare, social and educational services, as well as the integration of IDPs into host communities.

Conclusions. The socio-demographic profile of internally displaced persons indicates the emergence in Ukraine of a distinct social group characterized by specific demographic and socio-economic features that should be taken into account in the formulation of demographic, social, and regional policies. A comprehensive analysis of IDP characteristics provides a stronger evidence base for setting public policy priorities, designing integration measures, and mitigating the long-term socio-demographic consequences of the war.
